Investing in a shed has never been easier… Today the most convenient way to shop for a garden shed is to go online.
There are many stores to shop from, ranging from specialised custom building retailers like TotalSpan, super garden shed stores like Cheap Sheds with 400+ options, supplier stores and now good old Bunnings.
There are many benefits of shopping for a garden shed online but be warned.. there are also risks involved if you don’t know what to look for (even at BUNNINGS!).
So in this article, I want to share with you the good, the bad and the UGLY truth about shopping for a garden sheds.
I have 10 years in this business and have seen it all!
The Pros Of Shopping Online
When shopping online you will find the widest range of backyard sheds available in the market. You can also easily,
- Do research and compare retailers and products.
- Select your favourite design best suited to your needs.
- Choose the right size instead of having to work with what is available.
- Choose the best colour so it can blend in with your home.
- Even add accessories to improve organisation and getting the most out of your shed.
And you can do all this in one shop!
Nowadays, there is so much information available about sheds on the Internet compared to what you will find when speaking to an in-store shop assistant at your local hardware store. You are also able to find better bargains online due to the better deals online retailers can make with their suppliers.
So it’s a win-win really.
What to expect when Shopping online
It may sound strange to buy a backyard storage shed, aviary, carport or even a garage online, but you will find it a faster and easier process. Plus you are probably going to get better service than you will find in-store.
Well in most cases you won’t be able to find a DIY shed in your local stores due to the cost involved with displaying them. If you are lucky, you might find one small shed assembled that you can view however, it’s only one and may not be the right fit for you.
Online you are provided with detailed images, dimensions videos and much more to help you make an informed decision.
Less Time Consuming
Then there is the issue of purchasing that small shed in-store. If you want one that is not in stock, they will have to order it in for you which few weeks. At the end of the day, you would have driven to a few different stores, spent time looking at sheds and speaking to assistants and waited 3 weeks for your shed. It is a time-consuming process which can be cut down to more than half when shopping online.
Lastly, what happens if you get your shed and it’s not what the assistant promised? What if it’s not what you wanted? You now have to drive back and organise its return which can be a hassle, a mission and always ends up in a fight. You will find with trusted online shed retailers the experience is the opposite. Returns are made easy and if your product is faulty they will do what they can to replace it.
BEST OF ALL with a trusted online shed retailer you will receive absolutely all the information you will require about your product, its assembly and more to ensure you are well prepared before your product arrives.
At the end of the day, there is no point going through the time-consuming process of getting it at the local shop, at the full retail price when you can source the same shed online for only the fraction of the price and in a much much shorter time frame.
All sounds too good to be true! BUT it does come with a warning!
What to Watch Out For When of Shopping Online
Here’s the thing… Despite the wider range, more information and better deals online you will still have to be very careful who you purchase your desired product from.
Just like everywhere else not every business operates with high integrity and not every product is as good as the other.
1) Find a Reputable Retailer
We get contacted daily by people who have purchased their sheds somewhere else. It is not uncommon that after they made their purchase they never hear from the seller and have no idea where their product is.
Understandably the customers get very worried about their online purchase experience because they are unable to get in touch with the seller and they end up calling us to help. A great number of online sellers only focus on making the sale and thereafter sale service is minimal or of no concern to them.
A common marketing technique that is used by them is to beat every price that can be found online just to make the sale however, they cannot afford to provide any follow-up service or assistance after the sale. Unfortunately, it is you who will suffer and when things go wrong you are left on your own.
2) Find Out Where the Product Was Made
The other problem that seems to be ‘burning’ more and more Aussies trying to strike a bargain, is that they are not given enough information about what they are buying.
Most customers I find are after a high-quality Australian made product but end up with an imported one. Even at Bunnings they offer a bargain range which is actually imported! So you are not even safe from the big guys!
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with imported products and I am not a protectionist at all. Actually, I am a big believer in the global economy. The problem I am addressing is the issue that some imported products do not meet Australian standards and more often than not, they don’t have the engineering certificate that councils require.
We often get calls from people who have purchased such an item and their stories are very similar:
- They may have picked a shed or garage up on eBay or at an auction … $1200 which is not bad, but…
- They did not get the required permit from their local council and the product did not even meet the Australian standards.
- The original retailer is suddenly un-contactable and they are now left with a heap of low quality steel that cannot be used for anything.
- At the end of the day, they ended up throwing that money down the drain, as they had to dispose of the entire thing.
Sad but true and more common than you think!
Watch the below video that we recorded comparing an imported product, picked up from a hardware store to one of our high-quality Australian made garden sheds:
Remember to be careful and look for signs to see where your shed is coming from.

I didn’t know who to send this to, so I hope it gets to all the right people. I don’t usually send thank you notes to companies, as most of the time I feel that as a customer I have paid for the service. But in this case, I feel like Cheap Sheds has provided me with GREAT customer service and I would definitely recommend Cheap Sheds. From my first phone call to Cheap sheds and the delivery of the Shed it was a pleasant experience, I got told it would take around 3 weeks for the shed to be delivered which I expected anyway since I live in Sydney, but got a great surprise since “It only took a week”. When I saw the Box and laid out the contents, I must admit I was overwhelmed by how many pieces I had to put together, But when we got started found that it was very easy if you read the instructions first, not to mention I put the shed together with my 10-year-old nephew.
Once again Thank You for everything.

Krisztian Well, the AFL Grand Final is over, so is Bathurst and the Melbourne Cup, now that leaves time for the SHED.
Gavin, my son, mostly built the shed and I was his assistant. Little Archie was my little helper. Initially, we could not see the part numbers because we did not realise that they were printed on lightly but we soon learned were to look. The instruction sheet combined with watching your videos were very helpful to us too. Every now and then we would check them on the iPhone.By the time we got to assemble the last wall, we were experts in clipping those channels on. We took our time and completed the job in five and a half hours which I am sure is no speed record. Anyway, it is all up now and you can see from the photos I am quite proud of it. Hey, it doesn’t take long to fill it up, does it!
Many thanks for your kind thoughts on sending us the gifts which are most appreciated and a total surprise to a 68-year-old lady. May I say also that I have recommended your company to some friends who are building at the same time as us. Presently our new home is in the process of being built and your tips I know will come in very handy. We shall take a photo once everything is up and running so you can see the finished product. It is great to deal with a company that cares about the products they sell and also the people who make the purchase.
Once again thank you.
Thank you Krisztian, that is great customer follow up and well worthy of a reply, I will have no hesitation in recommending cheapsheds.com.au! I have built my garden shed and I am very pleased with it, I have still amused that it was cheaper to buy a shed from Queensland than locally!
